Myanmar’s Agricultural Sector has undergone a series of seismic shifts over the past decades, moving from a centralised Socialist system to a market-driven model that encourages agribusiness and large-scale domestic and foreign investment. The policy brief explores research conducted in 13 villages in Shan State and Sagaing and Mandalay Divisions in 2012 focused on the impacts of these changes on the tenure security of smallholder upland and lowland cultivators, and the growing threat of land grabbing. Through this the paper aims to share farmers’ voices with key decision-makers and help inform a land policy design that strengthens the rights and land tenure security of smallholder farmers nationwide.
